Succulents Care Tips

Succulents are drought-tolerant plants that store water in their leaves, making them ideal for low-maintenance plant lovers.

While every individual succulent variety has slightly different care rules, here are some tips for major succulent categories!

🌵 Desert Succulents

Examples: Echeveria, Aloe, most cacti, Sedum

Care style (high light + dry):

• ☀️ Light: Very bright light / direct sun (6+ hrs/ day)

• 💧 Water: Infrequent, only when soil is fully dry

• 🌡️ Humidity: Prefer dry air

• 🪴 Soil: Fast-draining cactus mix

👉 Big mistake: Overwatering. These rot quickly with too much water.

🌿 Tropical Succulents

Examples: Haworthia, Gasteria

Care style (lower light + moderate water):

• ☀️ Light: Bright indirect light (can tolerate lower light)

• 💧 Water: More often than desert types, but still let soil dry

• 🌡️ Humidity: Tolerate normal indoor humidity

• 🪴 Soil: Well-draining, but can hold slightly more moisture

👉 Big mistake: Treating them like cacti (too much sun can scorch them).

🌸 Soft Succulents

Examples: Crassula Jade, Kalanchoe

Care style (balanced):

• ☀️ Light: Bright indirect to some direct sun

• 💧 Water: Moderate—let top 1–2 inches dry

• 🌡️ Humidity: Average indoor is fine

• 🪴 Soil: Well-draining

👉 Big mistake: Not enough light → they get leggy.

🌱 Epiphytic / Jungle Succulents

Examples: Christmas Cactus, Rhipsalis

Care style (forest-like conditions):

• ☀️ Light: Bright indirect (no harsh sun)

• 💧 Water: More frequent than desert types—don’t let fully dry out

• 🌡️ Humidity: Prefer higher humidity

• 🪴 Soil: Slightly richer, but still well-draining
