We pick varieties for how they hold up to shipping and how forgiving they are once they arrive, not just how they photograph. That still means care needs vary by plant — a snake plant and a fern want very different things — so check the individual product page before you buy, especially if low light or infrequent watering is a constraint.

If there's a cat or dog in the house the plant is going to, that's worth a second look too. Plant toxicity varies a lot by species and isn't something we'd want you to assume either way. Good occasions for a plant

Plants work well anywhere a gift needs to outlast the moment it marks. A new home, a promotion, a new job, a "thinking of you" that isn't tied to a specific event — a plant covers all of it without the timing pressure a bouquet has. They're also a common choice for sympathy specifically: a living plant gives the recipient something to tend to on their own schedule, long after the flowers other people sent have faded.

For offices, plants tend to outperform flowers on a cost basis too. A single desk plant can sit in a reception area or conference room for a year or more with basic care, where a bouquet needs replacing every week or two.
